Today, I ventured out into the world of milling only to discover a beautiful company that is born out of the passion and love for timber and design that all businesses should endeavour to have. On their blog, was a post that touched my heart: The Beauty of Handmade.
This is an important topic for any designer/maker. I can’t even contract part of my design out without being concerned about the quality of workmanship. To handcraft a beautiful timber piece and then have to install ugly messy welded brackets is just disappointing both for myself and my clients. In the end though, if a customer can’t distinguish between hand made and factory mass produced, let them be happy with the cheap and nasty, and let our clients enjoy the part of us that we have poured into every piece. It breaks my heart to have someone tell me my work is being priced too high and it seems our profession is a difficult one generally. Our prices are not meant to compete with places like Ikea. When you select a hand crafted piece it is not based on price or function, it is about something deeper. We don’t aim to produce something that looks machine made, it’s about the human involvement: the detailing, the emotion, the slight imperfections, the uniqueness and the risks we take as designers.
Love us for our hearts not our price tags.
