Concept House

Several years ago, I began this fantasy of a dream house which was built into a cliff face and featured a glass balcony. With all the amazing glass ‘skywalks’ being featured across the globe, I thought it would be a good time to bring the two ideas together visually with the intention of one day turning this concept into a reality.

Living underground is a growing phenomenon whether it be simply covering your house in the illusive ‘grass roof’, digging a whole in the ground and building a house in it or utilising a cave like Curt and Deborah Sleeper’s Caveland.

1I imagine my house having an entrance from above. Something hidden and surrounded by grass which includes a sloped driveway and garage just under the surface. There would be a passage of some sort which would include an elevator and stairs taking you deep down into the earth. The house itself would be a huge space dug out of the cliff, big enough to house a four-storey house and the extensive reinforcement. This could mean making the space elongated based on manufacturing sizes for the supporting structure. The only exterior face would be a heavy steel and glass curtain wall set back from the surface of the cliff and the glass balcony would extend out of the lowest level.

The interior would be a sleek hyper-modern space with expansive open-planning. Ideally, the property would be as self sustaining and eco-friendly as possible. Overall, the design is just a dream but just maybe, one day it could be more.
