The difficulties associated with being a self-funded furniture designer-maker, make selecting materials incredibly important. My most recent design concept, the Priority Desk, allows some freedom in the standard of the material. Since the final thickness for the material would be around 30mm, it is quite feasible to access timber of a lower grade and still maintain strength and stability. My client just happens to have access to several trees out the back of a property in Montana just outside Deloraine, Tasmania. So, what next?
Having never cut down my own tree before it was going to be a big ask and after taking a wander through the trees (quite a nice bunch actually), we soon realised our little chainsaw and a few muscles weren’t going to be sufficient to mill over 50 meters of timber. Time to call in the professionals, maybe Maclaine Enterprises in Deloraine can help. Let’s hope I can get this timber ready in time.
