A day of turning these:
into these:
8 hours later and we still didn’t finish them all. Meanwhile: the timber for the display boxes is getting its first layer of grey wash. Complications included:
- Material dimensions changing and causing issues with contact on the jig
- Router table bed not being flat
- Jig warping
- Difficulties with keeping the jig flat while routing
- Tear out from routing
It was also interesting to see the production process as it happened. It seems with almost all production sequences someone is left waiting between processing parts. This raises the problem of adding things like jigs to allow faster production, is the cost worth it in the end? Time versus cost. The same concern arose in the last stages. Certain machining processes take longer. In a commercial workshop, do you accept the cost to buy an additional machine or do you allow the process to take longer and just take that into account? The same thing can be said for material. In our industry networking is incredibly important. Certain networks can allow a reduction in material cost, especially if the material is a waste product for that particular contact. However, sometimes coordinating the use of waste material into a project can be incredibly time consuming and sometimes time is a concern. Time or money? Eventually, you have to make a choice.
